SPAM  EMAIL

We all get it, unsolicited email offering us deals and products for all sorts of things - most of which we can avoid using spam filters, but the spammers keep finding new ways to get to us, and sooner or later spam starts.

The word "Spam" as applied to Email means Unsolicited Bulk Email ("UBE").

Unsolicited means that the Recipient has not granted verifiable permission for the message to be sent. Bulk means that the message is sent as part of a larger collection of messages, all having substantively identical content.

A message is Spam only if it is both Unsolicited and Bulk. A single personalised email sent to you is not spam as such although you may be irritated by it and mark it as spam.

What this means is that email you receive may well be spam BUT creates opportunities for the sender to get a response from you by;

  • replying to their email (if a valid email exists)
  • visiting their web site
  • accepting free or trial offers
  • ordering goods or services (often on special terms to attract or "hook" you)

All spam content and aims should be suspect and are best deleted and avoided, otherwise you and your money are at risk from theft and fraud.

We have a dedicated section of articles on various Spam Issues written by our founder Maurice S Clarke, including links to useful web sites which you can review and read here
