SAVING ON FOOD

Some useful tips for keeping costs down whether feeding yourself or a family of 10;

  • Avoid forgetting to use food that has a "use by date" tossing out of date food is wasteful.
  • Check supermarkets at end of day often they have massive discounts especially on bread and cakes etc which you can fill a freezer with.
  • Fill up on fresh fruit it's good for you, cheap and does not need cooking or heating up.
  • Cook just what you need for a large family or for a few cook and have over several days.
  • Use the oven for several things at once including TOMORROWS dinner which you can reheat in the microwave.
  • Avoid takeaway meals, not only are they not as healthy as home cooked but they cost more than meals you can source and cook yourself. The lazy way to spend money on food.
  • Buy in bulk provided you can freeze or use in date. Tinned goods have long shelf lives but can still GO OFF if forgotten about.
  • Plan what the kids eat for snacks. Carrot sticks and other healthy snacks are cheaper than chocolate and similar types of snacks.
  • Control the portion sizes. Eating larger servings than needed hurts your waistlines and your budget!
  • Buy a whole chicken (or other types of meats) and cut it yourself. Wrap and freeze items for how you will use them. For example:
    • chicken backs & necks for stew
    • chicken wings for "buffalo wings"
    • chicken legs and thighs for frying or baking
    • chicken breasts for casseroles
  • Grow your own vegetables. How to Grow Your Own Organic Vegetables for Frugal Sustainability Effective ways that you can raise your own organic food in a small area with minimum effort and little cost.
  • Plan meals for a week and then make a shopping list. You can cut down on trips to the grocery store and buy only what you need.
  • Check stores and avoid the one stop store, some stores have specific lines cheaper always, visit all the big stores in your area in rotation and buy their best deals.
  • Know what you already have at home, doubling up, or over stocking may result in out of date throw outs.
  • Check your shelves, freezer and refrigerator before making a shopping list.
