Small Business Support Net - helping new business start, survive and prosper. MANAGING THE MONEY IN BUSINESS Any business thrives on cash flow, money coming in which should cover all expenses and leave some over, commonly called profit. The profit can be re-invested into the business to fuel further growth or to pay out to the owners. When starting a business cash flow is potentially nil, when it starts is ruled as such by the type of business. In case of say a retail shop, once open for business could start to generate income very soon, ideally on day 1. For a business which supplies other firms they may have to be billed and payment may not be expected for several weeks or even months. A new businesses income is potentially uncertain for some time, but overheads and fixed costs are more known and predictable. Ideally when setting up a new business one should budget for NO INCOME for 3-6 months even if money starts to flow on day 1 or after a few weeks. Businesses fail where income fails to meet the expectations of owners and they are under funded fort those critical few months. The first YEAR is the hardest during which time you learn a lot of realities which are often vastly different from your predictions. To control costs and income you can use a simple manual book keeping system or a simple accounts computer program which need not be expensive. Each week you should be able to review progress (or lack of it) and assess if you are on target, over budget or doing better than expected. It is better to be PESSIMISTIC and under estimate sales, and OVER ESTIMATE costs. It is potentially dangerous and fool hardy to be OPTIMISTIC until some tangible results are achieved. You must know day to day how things are financially, the sooner you spot potential problems and make decisions to improve the situation the better. A business will fail if owners loose sight and knowledge of basic cash flow, expenses and know how sound or weak their financial situation is at at one time.
