Present Wish Lists

Adding Items to a Wish List

Items are added to a present or gift wish list by the list owner and records a range of gifts they would like for a forthcoming celebration.

We use the term "wishlist owner" to describe the person to whom the wishlist is referring. It maybe that one person, through an online wishlist account controls wishlists for several people such as family members.

Presents added to the list should take into consideration the following key factors;

  • the age group of the wishlist owner
  • the sex of the wishlist owner
  • special hobbies and interests of the wishlist owner
  • consider if wishlist owner has their own home, in which case items for that may be useful especially for weddings and engagements.
  • the budget range for givers to work with
  • the ability for several givers to club together to give a costly gift
  • where the item requested can be obtained from, a URL of a source helps if the wishlist provides for that. This is especially useful if the item is unusual and not readily available locally.
  • the time frame to allow gift givers to source, have delivered and wrap presents, allow at least a month before the event.

Make the list with MORE items that potential gift givers, put on silly and expensive "pipe dream" gifts. And a few "cheapskate" gifts too, it breaks the ice and ensures EVERYONE is covered by gift options, do not assume present givers have huge budgets.

Once the list is completed then make sure you make people aware of the list, either in a printed form or online.

Lists that allow givers to tick off a gift they will buy are good and avoid duplications. Watch for people who ONLY have a printed list, best to ask them to tell someone who can update the online list when they have chosen a gift, or advise them is someone else has already made that choice.
